Biography of
Olli Silvén
Already before his teens, influenced by the 1968 science fiction film “2001: A Space Odyssey”, Olli got fascinated by artificial intelligence. The capability of the fictional HAL 9000 computer to hear, speak, plan, recognize faces, see, and even read lips, made an impact that lasts today. Vision playing a key role in biological perception and cognitive behaviour, his current research interests range from implementation technologies of environment embedded wireless self-powered vision sensors, to machine learning in diverse applications. His past contributions include several commercialized research prototypes from industrial visual inspection systems to video codec solutions. Today, Olli is the head of Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis that aims at creating intelligent perceptual interfaces, significant inspiration stemming from HAL 9000.
