Prime Minister Petteri Orpo Explored Finland’s 6G Leadership at the University of Oulu
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo visited the University of Oulu and 6G Flagship on 24 January 2025 to learn about the latest advancements in next-generation wireless communication technologies. He was hosted by Rector Arto Maaninen, Dean Jukka Riekki, and Professor Matti Latva-aho, Director of 6G Flagship. The discussions focused on the global significance of 6G research and its role in driving Finland’s leadership in digital transformation.
The 6G Flagship programme, based at the University of Oulu, is internationally recognised as a pioneer in wireless technology research. It addresses key challenges also set by ITU to offer solutions for merging communications and sensing, integrating AI and mobile networks as well as providing ubiquitous connectivity. “Having the Prime Minister visit 6G Flagship highlights the national importance of our work. Important challenges related to 6G resilience are almost untouched and should be addressed systematically in the coming years. Long-term funding should be secured to make it happen,” said Professor Matti Latva-aho.
The Prime Minister’s visit highlights the important connection between government support and Finland’s ability to lead in global technology. Meeting with researchers at the forefront of innovation reflects the importance of advancing wireless technologies and addressing emerging challenges. Targeted investments are needed for Finland to maintain its competitive edge and foster the development of resilient, future-ready communication systems.
