Mariella Särestöniemi receives the 2024 eHealth Award

The annual eHealth awards of the Finnish Society for Telemedicine and eHealth were presented at the eHealth2024 conference in Tampere on 14-15 November. Mariella Särestöniemi, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Oulu, was awarded for her outstanding work in promoting digital healthcare.

Särestöniemi is known for her cross-disciplinary research combining medicine and technology. Her research focuses, in particular, on the use of wireless radio technologies in diagnostics. Särestöniemi is involved in developing solutions to improve access to healthcare in sparsely populated areas and developing countries. With 85 peer-reviewed publications to her name, Särestöniemi also chaired the scientific committee of the First Nordic Conference on Digital Health and Wireless Communication (NCDHWS2024), held in Oulu in May 2024. Additionally, she led the editorial work for two conference proceedings published in Springer’s esteemed Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series.

Janne Lahtiranta, an Adjunct professor at the University of Turku, was also honoured. He has focused on health technology development, particularly in the area of test platforms and the use of synthetic health data.

The awards were presented during the conference’s opening session to honour exceptional contributions to telemedicine and eHealth. The Finnish Society of Telemedicine and eHealth hope these recognitions inspire continued innovation and impactful work in the field.
