6G Flagship and XGMF Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Industrial Wireless Cooperation

The University of Oulu’s 6G Flagship and Japan’s XG Mobile Promotion Forum (XGMF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in industrial wireless communications, particularly in 5G and 6G technologies. The agreement sets out a framework for cooperation, including information exchange, participation in industry events, and joint promotional activities.

While not legally binding, the MoU signals a commitment to deeper cooperation and provides both organisations with the flexibility to explore areas of mutual interest without contractual obligations.

The agreement was signed in February 2025 by Dean Jukka Riekki of the University of Oulu’s Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering and Professor Akihiro Nakao, Co-Chair of XGMF.

“Our countries have collaborated in mobile communications since the late 90s and 3G standardisation. Given today’s geopolitical climate, this partnership is more crucial than ever as we work to align 6G standards for our societies’ benefit,” said Professor Matti Latva-aho, Director of 6G Flagship, Special Advisor to XGMF, and Global Fellow at the University of Tokyo.

The MoU is part of wider international efforts to drive innovation in future wireless communications. By bringing together leading research institutions and industry stakeholders, the agreement reinforces the role of cross-border collaboration in shaping the development of next-generation mobile networks.
