Speeding up the 6G research globally
6G must provide increased transmission capabilities and safe and dependable global service delivery. These will help bridge the existing digital divide. University of Oulu’s 6G Flagship research programme has published the fifth issue of its 6G Waves magazine.
The magazine is an annual publication celebrating 6G research and development achievements. Inside the fifth edition, you’ll find informative articles, interviews with top researchers and innovators, and commentary on the most pressing issues in 6G technology. Whether you’re an engineer working at the forefront of 6G technology or a user looking for new ideas to explore, Waves Magazine has something for everyone.
“The second phase of 6G Flagship started. The next four years will be the most intensive in 6G research. At the time of ending the programme in mid-2026, 6G standardisation can be expected to be progressing at full speed. Until then, we will have a lot of fun investigating all possible venues making 6G possible. Our key research directions remain somewhat unchanged, and the focus will gradually shift toward defining key building blocks and the overall 6G system concept”, says the Director of 6G Flagship Matti Latva-aho in his foreword.
The magazine highlights the latest news and opens the future of the research by presenting four areas into which the research is divided. The theme of the previous issue was 6G demos. Now the focus is on clarifying the contents of the research themes, which are the guidelines for 6G technology and the 6G-enabled future. At 6G Flagship, there are four Strategic Research Areas. 6G Waves magazine presents them all.
Wireless Connectivity investigates discovering technology enablers. It focuses on developing the wireless system concept, studying different transmission techniques and receiver algorithms, as well as the related implementations that make 6G possible. In short, the area concentrates on researching ultra-reliable, low-latency communications and pursuing the 1 Tbps frequency. Breakthroughs made in this research area will make unmanned processes possible.
Devices and Circuit Technology focuses on the materials and circuit technologies required to push the operational frequency into the Terahertz communications range. Breakthroughs made in this research area will make unlimited connectivity possible.
Distributed Intelligence investigates how we might leverage modern Al-inspired cloud-type computing close to users and end-user applications more efficiently. Its primary research theme is Mobile Edge Intelligence. Breakthroughs in this field of research will enable time-critical and trusted applications.
Human-centric Wireless Services does multidisciplinary research across verticals. They seek to comprehend how the critical vertical application areas are constructed, the main actors in the value chain, and how and what components of the key application areas’ requirements must be recognised for different 6G system settings. Breakthroughs in this field of research will enable disruptive value networks.
