ITEE and IMT Lucca sign a Memorandum of Understanding

After several years of working together on a personal level with IMT Lucca’s Assistant Professor Simone Soderi, a University of Oulu alumnus, the University of Oulu’s Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) and IMT Lucca formalised their research collaboration with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 31st October 2022.

On October 4, 2022, the University of Oulu’s representatives made their first official visit to IMT Lucca, an Italian school specialising in advanced studies. IMT Lucca is a Public University School of Higher Education and Research situated between the renowned university cities of Florence and Pisa. Despite its young age, IMT Lucca is already making significant advances in research and education. The main focus of IMT Lucca is postgraduate research and education in economics, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, archaeology, art history, and cultural heritage management. Because they do not offer M.Sc. programmes, all of their educational efforts are aimed at students above the undergraduate level.

Adjunct Professor Matti Hämäläinen and Mr Tuomas Paso from the Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) presented to the Rector, Professor Rocco De Nicola, and seven professors of different levels from IMT Lucca on the University of Oulu, ITEE, CWC, and 6G Flagship.

Several research areas for possible collaboration were identified during discussions. Wireless communications, machine learning, artificial intelligence, the edge-cloud continuum, cyber security, security design using formal research methods, threat recognition, and the joint use of security and AI algorithms in the context of federated learning were identified as common research interests across the ITEE. The hosts at IMT Lucca were also interested in the research infrastructure at the University of Oulu.

The two universities are likely to collaborate through a variety of means, including joint EU-level projects, student and staff exchanges, and short courses. Even though official discussions have only recently begun, CWC and Systems Security Modelling and Analysis (SySMA) researchers are already working on a few co-authored articles.
