Japan’s 6G Forum Announces New Leadership Structure
The Japan 6G Forum, officially known as the XG Mobile Promotion Forum (XGMF), has recently undergone a significant transformation. Established on April 1, 2024, XGMF succeeded the 5G Mobile Promotion Forum and the Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium. This new entity aims to consolidate efforts in advancing mobile communication technologies, focusing on 6G innovations and accelerating the deployment of 5G technologies.
The forum has appointed Professor Akihiro Nakao of the University of Tokyo as its new Co-Chair, alongside another leader, to drive its vision forward. Nakao is also the first-ever guest professor at the University of Oulu’s Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE).
Additionally, the Director of 6G Flagship, Professor Matti Latva-aho, a renowned expert in wireless communications at the University of Oulu and a Global Fellow at Tokyo University, has been appointed a Special Advisor together with Hideyuki Tokuda, President of NICT, and several others. His extensive experience and leadership in international collaborations are invaluable to the forum’s expertise.
The XGMF aims to address the evolving mobile communications needs by promoting mobile services and business development. It is structured to support innovative projects, enhance international collaboration, and contribute to the growth of the information and communication industry. The forum’s Project Management Office (PMO) will oversee various projects, ensuring effective management and coordination.
Membership categories include general, individual, and special members, transitioning from previous forums. The XGMF also focuses on key projects such as millimetre-wave technology, application development, NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks), and high-frequency technologies.
