Strategic Research Area 4
Human-centric Wireless Services
Led by Professor Ari Pouttu, this strategic research area emphasises the necessity of commercial-grade test environments for vertical applications to experience sufficiently realistic testing conditions. The 6G Test Network (6GTN) is envisaged as a solution for this purpose. By facilitating testing across a myriad of verticals, a more comprehensive examination of interoperability challenges and requirements can be achieved compared to testing within a single vertical.
6G, being an upcoming general-purpose technology, will significantly influence how value and profit are derived from technological advancements. It’s imperative to contemplate the intersections of business, technology, economics, and sustainability (aligned with UN SDGs) for the creation of future 6G systems and technologies, as well as the associated legislation. Additionally, research is pivotal to exploring the empowerment of users as active participants within the 6G ecosystem.

Research Themes
5GTN to 6GTN
5GTN is the world’s first (2015) open private 5G test network with LTE and 5GNR (3.5, 24 GHz) with both NSA and SA capability and edge/cloud computing continuum. It also has campus-wide licensed and unlicensed IoT, big data computing cluster and energy research assets, including sustainable local energy production.
This experimentation platform evolves following 6G research progress, technology development and applications: Future architecture with network Edge AI solution assuming cloudRAN, THz technology enablers, signal processing solutions, sensing and imaging, integrated positioning, and others are integrated as prototypes as they become available.

View bioStrategic vertical areas
Based on revenue expansion potential and our evaluation of verticals with the most significant opportunities, we have chosen as strategic vertical areas industry, vehicular, health, and energy.
To foresee the drivers in the respective verticals and the expected change in business, we engage with respective stakeholders. We also bring to light the features within the verticals that may require 6G capabilities and consequently attempt to provide a set of key performance and value indicators for the vertical businesses that highlight the divergence in requirements to be experienced in the 2030s.
We have formulated critical vertical-specific research questions to be answered during this decade to create the foreseen solutions.

View bioSustainability, business, and regulation
Our research brings together business, regulation, and technology perspectives to developing future sustainable mobile communication systems as enablers for solving significant sustainability challenges. We integrate the triple bottom line of sustainability and the UN SDG framework into 6G R&D, aiming at identifying new business opportunities and their consequent impact on policy making. Specific expertise areas include futures research, business models, business platforms and ecosystems, stakeholder analysis, telecommunication regulation, and techno-economics.

Solutions and Development
Our research adopts an interdisciplinary approach where technical and test network research is combined with techno-economic and business considerations as well as regulations and standards. Network densification, spectrum sharing and the increasing amounts and diversifying nature of data will call for fundamentally new and innovative network operator and ownership models whose development requires an interdisciplinary approach. Key topics to analyse include ownership and investment issues regarding the network infrastructure, radio spectrum and data. Future solutions are expected to require changes in telecommunications legislation, mobile communication market structures and network technologies which need supporting research.
Development
Our focus is on how different network ownership and service provisioning models affect the design of radio access systems needed to guarantee success for the organic or holistic growth of future digital services. Our interdisciplinary regulation, business and technological research develops new revolutionary network operating models, i.e. a novel micro-operator based business model relying on local availability of micro-licensed spectrum.
